Decoding the Spec: Understanding the 20 Inch CL600 Full Bore Ball Valve

In the world of industrial flow control, few components are as critical as the Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve. If you work in oil and gas, chemical processing, or power generation, you"ve likely encountered specifications like "20 Inch, CL600, RF, ASTM A216 WCB, API 6D."

But what does all that technical jargon actually mean?

In this article, we will strip back the layers of a specific, high-performance valve specification. Whether you are a procurement specialist, a piping engineer, or just a curious reader, understanding these parameters is key to appreciating the engineering behind modern pipelines.

Today’s featured component is a 20-inch Full Bore Ball Valve, rated for Class 600, with a Raised Face, Trunnion Mounted design, made from ASTM A216 WCB carbon steel, and manufactured to API 6D standards.

Let's break it down piece by piece.

1. The "Full Bore" Design: Unrestricted Flow

The term "Full Bore" (or Full Port) refers to the internal diameter of the valve. In this design, the ball has a hole (bore) that is roughly the same inside diameter as the pipeline itself 

Why does this matter

  • Minimal Friction Loss: Because the bore is as wide as the pipe, the fluid (whether crude oil, gas, or water) passes through without turbulence or pressure drop.

  • Pigging Capability: This is crucial for pipeline maintenance. "Pigs"—devices sent down the pipeline for cleaning or inspection—can pass through a full bore valve without getting stuck

2. Size and Pressure: The 20 Inch CL600 Rating

  • 20 Inch (DN500): This indicates the nominal pipe size. A 20-inch valve is a substantial piece of equipment, used in major transmission lines and heavy industrial applications

  • Class 600 (CL600): This pressure rating, defined by ASME B16.34, refers to the valve's ability to withstand internal pressure. CL600 doesn't mean 600 psi; it means it is designed for higher pressure/temperature tolerances. At ambient temperature, a CL600 valve can typically handle around 1,480 psi (approx. 102 bar) . It is a step up from the more common CL150 and is used in severe service conditions

3. Connection Type: Raised Face (RF)

The Raised Face (RF) refers to the flange facing. The RF flanges have a small raised ring around the bore where the gasket sits. This design concentrates the clamping force of the bolts onto a smaller area, creating a tighter, more reliable seal. It is the most common flange facing type in industrial piping systems

4. Trunnion Mounted: The Backbone of High Pressure

This is perhaps the most important mechanical feature. In smaller valves, you often see a "Floating Ball" design, where the ball is pushed by the pressure against the seat to create a seal 

However, in a Trunnion Mounted valve, the ball is supported at the top and the bottom by bearings (trunnions) 

  • Stability: Because the ball is fixed in place, it doesn't rely on the pressure to push it against the seats.

  • Low Torque: Even under extremely high pressure, the trunnion absorbs the thrust, meaning the valve requires less force to open and close.

  • Application: This design is mandatory for large bore (like 20") and high-pressure (like CL600) applications 

5. The Body Material: ASTM A216 WCB

The valve body is made from ASTM A216 WCB. This is the workhorse material of the industrial valve world.

  • ASTM A216 is the standard specification for carbon steel castings suitable for high-temperature service.

  • WCB stands for "Weldable Cast Carbon Steel Grade B"

Why WCB?
It offers an excellent balance of strength, ductility, and cost. With a tensile strength of 485-655 MPa and a yield strength of over 250 MPa, it is robust enough to handle high-pressure hydrocarbons and steam -4. It is also highly weldable, allowing it to be fitted into pipelines easily -

Note: While excellent for general service, WCB is not suitable for corrosive acidic environments or cryogenic temperatures.

6. The Gold Standard: API 6D

Finally, the entire valve is manufactured to API 6D specifications. Issued by the American Petroleum Institute, API 6D is the comprehensive standard for pipeline valves (ball, gate, plug, and check) 

Adherence to API 6D ensures:

  • Rigorous Testing: The valve undergoes hydrostatic shell tests (1.5 times the pressure rating), seat leakage tests, and backseat tests

  • Design Integrity: It dictates face-to-face dimensions (ASME B16.10), anti-static devices (to prevent sparks in flammable environments), and fire-safe design considerations 

  • Double Block and Bleed (DBB): API 6D valves often feature DBB capability, meaning the valve can isolate upstream and downstream pressure and vent the cavity, ensuring zero leakage
