Comprehensive Knowledge of Industrial Steel Pipes: Classification, Manufacturing, Applications and Selection

2026-09-08 16:27:54

1. Core Classification of Industrial Steel Pipes

Industrial steel pipes are classified mainly by manufacturing technology, which fundamentally defines their structural characteristics, mechanical properties, and applicable scenarios. The two primary categories are seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes, with distinct production processes and performance advantages.

1.1 Seamless Steel Pipes

Seamless steel pipes (SMLS) are produced from solid steel billets through heating, piercing, rolling, and finishing processes, with no welding seams on the entire pipe body. The integrated molding structure eliminates the weakest link of welded joints, endowing the pipes with uniform structural integrity, high tensile strength, and superior pressure and temperature resistance. These pipes feature dense metal texture, stable mechanical performance, and excellent fatigue resistance, making them suitable for harsh working conditions with strict safety requirements.
Common specifications of seamless steel pipes comply with international standards such as ASTM A106 for high-temperature service, ASTM A53 for general industrial use, and GB/T 8163 for fluid transportation. They are widely applied in high-pressure boiler systems, oil and gas exploration and transmission, hydraulic engineering, chemical reaction pipelines, and aerospace hydraulic systems.

1.2 Welded Steel Pipes

Welded steel pipes are manufactured by rolling steel plates or steel strips into cylindrical shapes and welding the joints through professional welding technologies. With mature production processes and high production efficiency, they are cost-effective for conventional industrial scenarios and account for the largest market share in general fluid transportation and structural engineering.
According to different welding processes, welded pipes are divided into two mainstream types. ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) steel pipes adopt electric resistance heating welding, with smooth weld surfaces and stable dimensional accuracy, ideal for low and medium-pressure water supply, gas transmission, and building structural supports. LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) steel pipes use submerged arc welding technology, featuring thick wall thickness and strong load-bearing capacity, which are widely used for large-diameter pipeline projects such as long-distance oil and gas transmission and municipal trunk pipelines.

2. Key Manufacturing Processes

The manufacturing process determines the core performance and quality of industrial steel pipes, and each link is strictly controlled to meet industrial precision and safety standards.
For seamless steel pipes, the whole production flow includes billet inspection, heating, rotary piercing, continuous rolling, sizing, cooling, straightening, and nondestructive testing. The rotary piercing process breaks the solid steel billet into a hollow tube blank, and subsequent precision rolling ensures uniform wall thickness and roundness of the pipe body. After cooling and straightening, all finished pipes undergo strict ultrasonic and hydraulic pressure tests to eliminate internal cracks and pressure resistance defects.
For welded steel pipes, the process starts with steel plate/strip leveling and slitting, followed by cold forming into tubular blanks. The welding process adopts automatic precise welding equipment to ensure weld compactness. After welding, the weld seam is polished and heat-treated to eliminate welding stress, and the finished products are tested for weld tightness, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality to avoid welding defects such as pores and cracks.

3. Anti-Corrosion Treatment Technology

Corrosion is the main factor leading to the aging and failure of steel pipes in industrial environments. Long-term exposure to humid air, chemical media, and underground humid soil will cause oxidation and electrochemical corrosion of steel pipes, reducing service life and even triggering safety accidents. Therefore, professional anti-corrosion treatment is essential for industrial steel pipes.
Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common and cost-effective anti-corrosion technology. The process immerses cleaned steel pipes in molten zinc liquid at about 450°C, forming a dense zinc-iron alloy layer and pure zinc coating on the pipe surface. The coating acts as a sacrificial protective layer, isolating the steel matrix from external corrosive media and providing excellent anti-rust and anti-corrosion performance for more than 20 years in conventional environments.
For harsh corrosive environments such as chemical plants and marine engineering, advanced anti-corrosion processes like epoxy coating, 3PE three-layer polyethylene anti-corrosion, and polyurethane coating are adopted. These treatments feature strong chemical resistance, wear resistance, and aging resistance, which can effectively resist the erosion of acid, alkali, salt and other corrosive substances, meeting the long-term operation requirements of high-corrosion industrial systems.

4. Main Industrial Applications

With differentiated performance characteristics, industrial steel pipes cover almost all industrial fields, realizing diversified functions of fluid transmission and structural support.
Oil and Gas Industry: Seamless steel pipes and large-diameter LSAW welded pipes are the core materials for oil and gas exploitation, wellhead piping, and long-distance transmission pipelines. Their high pressure resistance and structural stability ensure safe transportation of crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products under high-pressure and high-temperature underground conditions.
Power Generation Industry: High-temperature and high-pressure seamless steel pipes are used in boiler superheaters, reheaters, and thermal power circulation pipelines, adapting to extreme working conditions of high temperature and high pressure to ensure the stable operation of thermal power, hydropower, and new energy power generation systems.
Chemical and Petrochemical Industry: Anti-corrosion steel pipes and high-alloy seamless pipes are applied to transport chemical raw materials, corrosive solutions, and reaction mediums, meeting the anti-corrosion and high-precision transmission requirements of chemical production processes.
Construction and Municipal Engineering: Galvanized welded steel pipes are widely used in building fire protection systems, water supply and drainage pipelines, municipal gas pipelines, and steel structure supports, with balanced cost and performance suitable for conventional civil and industrial construction scenarios.
Mechanical and Automobile Industry: Precision seamless steel pipes are used in automobile exhaust systems, hydraulic pneumatic components, mechanical equipment bearings, and instrument pipelines, relying on their high dimensional accuracy and uniform mechanical properties to support precision mechanical operation.

5. Scientific Selection Principles of Steel Pipes

The rational selection of industrial steel pipes is the key to ensuring industrial system safety and reducing operating costs. Users need to comprehensively consider working conditions, medium characteristics, pressure and temperature parameters, and industry standards.
First, match the pipe type according to working pressure and temperature. Seamless steel pipes must be preferred for high-pressure (above 1.6MPa) and high-temperature (above 350°C) working conditions, while ERW welded pipes can meet the demand for low and medium-pressure conventional fluid transmission. Second, select anti-corrosion processes based on the service environment: hot-dip galvanized pipes for conventional atmospheric environments, and 3PE anti-corrosion or coated steel pipes for chemical corrosive and marine environments.
In addition, it is necessary to strictly comply with industry certification standards, check pipe dimensional accuracy, wall thickness uniformity, and nondestructive test reports, and avoid unqualified products with welding defects and internal cracks. For long-term continuous operation industrial systems, priority should be given to high-strength and high-durability steel pipes to reduce maintenance and replacement costs in the later stage.

6. Conclusion

Industrial steel pipes, as the "vascular" of modern industry, support the stable operation of various industrial systems with diverse types, reliable performance, and wide adaptability. The difference in manufacturing processes makes seamless and welded steel pipes have their own application advantages, and professional anti-corrosion treatment further extends their service life in complex environments. With the continuous upgrading of industrial manufacturing technology, steel pipe production is developing towards high precision, high strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight. Mastering the professional knowledge of industrial steel pipe classification, performance, and selection is crucial for optimizing industrial engineering design, improving operational safety, and reducing project costs, which provides a solid material guarantee for the high-quality development of modern industrial economy.
